When Every Assessment Is Impossible: The Data Scarcity Problem in Vietnamese Sports Analysis

In the last three matches of any national team, if you cannot determine what tactics they are playing, do not know the form of key players, and have no insight into the financial situation of the managing club – you are facing a wall of information. That is exactly the situation facing Vietnam's sports analysis industry: a data ecosystem so poor that every assessment is merely speculation. I have staked my reputation on numbers, and learned that reputation is just a number. But when those numbers do not exist, the credibility of an entire analysis industry becomes a joke. Look at the reality: our pre-match analyses often revolve around a few familiar names, a few scattered statistics from international websites, and the rest is subjective feeling and personal experience. Meanwhile, developed football nations like South Korea and Japan have data systems operating from academy level to national team. The context of the problem is not new. For a long time, Vietnamese experts have known that we lack a unified database of players, matches, and tactics. V-League clubs still operate on 'gut feeling' – relying on the naked eye of coaching staff rather than scientific metrics. The result is that deep analyses of meta, tactics, and club finances cannot be conducted due to lack of input data. The press conference is not a place to apologize, but a place where I declare war. But who do we declare war on when our opponent is not a specific team, but the lack of transparency in the data system? When a domestic league does not publish complete match statistics, when national teams do not have their own data analysis departments, when sports journalists have to fumble for sources – then every deep analysis becomes a template essay. Let us look at each aspect. Regarding meta and tactics: there is no data on tactical trends, on rule changes, on the impact of referee decisions. Regarding the tournament system: there is no comprehensive information on match schedules, match density, or disciplinary procedures. Regarding squads: there are no statistics on player fitness, performance efficiency, or positional interactions. Regarding finances: there are no transparent reports on club budgets, sponsorship contracts, or cash flow. This creates a paradox: we have talented people, quality players, exciting matches – but no ability to analyze them scientifically. When the stadium is empty, I see the truth that the crowd hides: the truth that we are running a sports industry without a data foundation. People call me a traitor, but I am only loyal to numbers. And the numbers are telling us: without changing our approach to data, Vietnamese football will forever remain stagnant. We can win the AFF Cup, we can reach the World Cup qualifiers, but those successes will always be luck-based – not systematically repeatable. Look at South Korea – where I live and work. Every K-League match has dozens of cameras, every player is tracked by GPS, every pass is analyzed by specialized software. That data not only serves coaching but also creates a rich media ecosystem – where journalists can write deep analyses based on concrete evidence. In Vietnam, we are still in the 'pre-data' era. Reporters have to find sources from social media, from brief press conferences, from rumors within inner circles. The result is that analytical articles are often subjective, lack scientific basis, and can be easily refuted by anyone with some knowledge. From defeat to prophecy: the distance is just one click. But that click will never come if we do not invest in a data system. I am not talking about buying expensive software or hiring foreign experts – I am talking about building a culture that respects numbers, a habit of recording and publishing information transparently. Every transfer contract is a card game, and I always see the face-down card. But when there is no data on a player's true value, on performance across seasons, on development potential – then every deal becomes a blind gamble. Vietnamese clubs often spend money based on feelings, on reputation, on introductions – not on scientific analysis. The crowd shouts, but I listen to the silence of tacticians. And tacticians in Vietnam are silent because they do not have the tools to express their thoughts systematically. They can see problems, can feel what is wrong, but cannot prove it with numbers – because numbers do not exist. I do not write to be loved, I write to be right – later.
